A jewel in the center of our City, the Belfast Zoo welcomes thousands of visitors annually to watch funky monkeys play about and hear lions roar. This attraction is open year-round, and families of all ages will delight in the zoo's tropical rainforest house, enclosures and stunning lake side habitats.
Belfast Zoo is home to over 1,000 animals and more than 150 different species with the majority of their animals in danger in their natural habitat. Belfast Zoo opened in 1934 and is one of Northern Ireland's top attractions receiving more than 300,000 visitors a year.
Thanks to a successful European breeding program, the zoo is home to a large herd of Rothchild's giraffes. A total of 28 giraffes have been born at the zoo since 1996. In 2011, we welcomed three new giraffes - Daisy from Denmark, Finn from Fota Wildlife Park in Cork and Sandsteen from Dublin Zoo.
Other animals you may find in the giraffe and elephant enclosure include ostriches and Grant's zebras. You can also see our meerkats, Visayan warty pigs and cape porcupines near the entrance to the enclosure.
